About Sterling Garage Door Pros
Work We Turn Down
We don't take every call that comes in. If a door is rusted through at the bottom panel and the track is bent past square, patching it is a waste of your money - that's a replacement, and we'll say so on the phone before we drive out. We also don't do custom architectural doors or carriage-style builds that need a specialty shop; our trucks carry parts for the standard steel and aluminum sectional doors that make up most of the housing stock out here, not one-off wood designs. And we don't chase every job that comes in from 19 miles out in Purcellville or West Springfield on the same afternoon as a Sterling emergency - if you're on the far edge of where we run, we'll tell you honestly whether same-day service is realistic instead of promising something we can't back up. Turning down the wrong job is part of doing the right ones well.
Where We Work
We're based at 109 Carpenter Dr in Sterling, VA, and most of our calls stay close to home. Great Falls sits about 6 miles out, Brambleton 7, Wolf Trap and Arcola both around 8, South Riding at 9 - that's the core of our day-to-day route, and we don't pad the trip charge for any of them. Further out, we still cover Dunn Loring, Bull Run, Merrifield, Pimmit Hills, Mantua, Aldie, and Idylwood around the 12-13 mile mark, and we'll run as far as Falls Church, Fairfax Station, West Falls Church, Yorkshire, Wakefield, Clifton, Sudley, Manassas Park, Waterford, Lake Barcroft, North Springfield, Bailey's Crossroads, Haymarket, Middleburg, West Springfield, Lincolnia, and Purcellville when the schedule allows. That's a wide service area, and distance matters for how fast we can get to you - closer jobs get tighter windows, the 15-19 mile range gets more of a scheduled slot than a rush.
Who Does the Work
The work itself is shaped by what's actually on these streets. Housing in the service area went up anywhere from 1938 to 2015, with the median landing around 1980, and most of the 31 named communities we work in are built out in that 1980s-90s wave. That means a lot of torsion spring setups from the same handful of manufacturers, a lot of chain-drive openers original to the house, and the occasional door still running on hardware from the 1930s-40s pockets that nobody stocks parts for anymore - those jobs take longer because we're sourcing or adapting, not swapping in a stock part. Winters here are cold enough, and severe enough, that we see a real spike in snapped torsion springs between December and February - cold steel gets brittle and a spring that's been fraying all fall will finally let go on the coldest morning of the week. That pattern shapes what's in the truck more than anything else does.
Frequently asked questions
Do you work on older garage doors or only newer models?
We work on both, but older doors - especially the ones on original hardware from houses built in the 1930s-40s pockets of the area - take longer because parts aren't stocked anymore and sometimes have to be sourced or adapted rather than swapped in directly.
How far out do you travel for a repair?
Our closest calls are 6 to 9 miles out - Great Falls, Brambleton, Wolf Trap, Arcola, South Riding. We also cover towns out to 18-19 miles like Purcellville and West Springfield, but farther jobs get a scheduled slot rather than a same-day rush.
Why do more springs break in winter?
Cold steel gets brittle, and a torsion spring that's been fraying through the fall often finally lets go on the coldest morning of the week. We see more snapped springs between December and February than any other time of year.
Will you always try to repair a door instead of replacing it?
No. If the bottom panel is rusted through and the track is bent past square, repair isn't worth your money. We'll tell you that on the phone before we drive out, rather than charge for a patch that won't hold.
